About Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive, advanced diagnostic procedure performed by a Radiologist. It uses a powerful magnetic field, radio waves, and a computer to generate exceptionally detailed, cross-sectional images of the body's internal structures, including soft tissues, organs, bones, and the nervous system. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, MRI does not use ionizing radiation, making it a safer option for repeated imaging. It is particularly valuable for examining the brain, spinal cord, joints, muscles, heart, and blood vessels. The procedure is crucial for diagnosing a wide range of conditions, from tumors and injuries to infections and neurological disorders, providing critical information that guides precise treatment planning.

Key Highlights

Produces highly detailed, multi-planar images of soft tissues, organs, and bones without using ionizing radiation.Excellent for visualizing the brain, spinal cord, nerves, muscles, ligaments, and tendons.Non-invasive and generally painless, with no recovery time needed for the scan itself. Can be performed with contrast agents to enhance visibility of specific areas like blood vessels or tumors.Provides critical information for diagnosing complex conditions, planning surgeries, and monitoring treatment effectiveness.

Who is this surgery for?

  • Suspected neurological disorders (e.g., stroke, multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, aneurysms).
  • Evaluation of joint injuries, such as torn ligaments (ACL, meniscus) or cartilage damage.
  • Spinal conditions including herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or infections.
  • Assessment of abdominal and pelvic organs for tumors, inflammation, or other abnormalities.
  • Cardiac imaging to evaluate heart structure, function, and blood vessels (cardiac MRI).
  • Detection and staging of cancers in various parts of the body.
  • Investigation of unexplained chronic pain, headaches, or seizures.

How to prepare

  • Inform the radiologist and technologist about any metal implants, pacemakers, cochlear implants, or aneurysm clips, as these may be contraindications.
  • Remove all metal objects, including jewelry, watches, hairpins, eyeglasses, and hearing aids.
  • Wear comfortable, metal-free clothing; you may be asked to change into a hospital gown.
  • For certain abdominal or pelvic MRIs, you may be instructed to fast for 4-6 hours prior.
  • Inform the staff if you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or have severe kidney problems (if contrast is planned).
  • Discuss any history of claustrophobia; sedation can be arranged if necessary.

Risks & possible complications

  • Potential reaction to contrast dye (gadolinium), including nausea, headache, or, rarely, a severe allergic reaction.
  • Risk of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (a rare but serious condition) in patients with severe kidney impairment receiving gadolinium contrast.
  • Discomfort from lying still for an extended period (typically 30-60 minutes) inside the narrow scanner tube.
  • Anxiety or claustrophobia during the procedure.
  • Heating or movement of certain metallic implants or fragments, which is why thorough screening is essential.
  • The loud knocking noises from the machine, for which earplugs or headphones are provided.

Recovery & hospital stay

  • There is typically no specific recovery period; you can resume normal activities and diet immediately after the scan.
  • If you received sedation, you will need someone to drive you home and should avoid operating machinery for 24 hours.
  • If contrast was used, drink plenty of water to help flush it from your system.
  • Rarely, if you experience any delayed reaction to contrast (like a rash), contact your doctor.
  • The radiologist will analyze the images and send a detailed report to your referring physician, who will discuss the results with you in a follow-up appointment.
  • checked Typical hospital stay: 0 days (outpatient procedure)
  • checked Expected recovery time: 0 days (immediate)
