About Sonography

Sonography, also known as diagnostic ultrasound, is a non-invasive, radiation-free imaging procedure performed by a Radiologist. It uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of the body's internal organs, tissues, and blood flow. This versatile and painless technique is a cornerstone of modern medical diagnostics, allowing for the detailed examination of areas such as the abdomen, pelvis, thyroid, breasts, heart (echocardiogram), and musculoskeletal system. It is commonly used to monitor fetal development during pregnancy, diagnose conditions like gallstones or cysts, evaluate blood vessels, and guide certain medical procedures. Its safety, accessibility, and ability to provide immediate visual feedback make it an essential tool for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.

Key Highlights

Non-invasive and painless procedure with no needles or incisions. No exposure to ionizing radiation, making it very safe for all patients, including pregnant women.Provides real-time, dynamic images of organs, tissues, and blood flow.Versatile tool used for diagnosing a wide range of conditions across multiple body systems.Often requires minimal to no special preparation.Generally quick to perform, with results often available immediately for the Radiologist to review./ul

Who is this surgery for?

  • Monitoring fetal growth, development, and anatomy during pregnancy (obstetric ultrasound).
  • Evaluating abdominal pain to diagnose conditions like gallstones, kidney stones, appendicitis, or liver disease.
  • Examining pelvic organs (uterus, ovaries) for fibroids, cysts, or other abnormalities.
  • Assessing the thyroid gland for nodules or goiter.
  • Guiding needle placement for biopsies or fluid drainage (aspiration).
  • Evaluating blood vessels for clots (DVT), blockages, or aneurysms (Doppler ultrasound).
  • Examining the breasts to characterize lumps found on a physical exam or mammogram.
  • Assessing musculoskeletal injuries like tendon tears or joint inflammation.

How to prepare

  • For abdominal ultrasounds (liver, gallbladder, pancreas), patients are typically asked to fast (no food or drink) for 6-8 hours beforehand to ensure a clear view.
  • For pelvic ultrasounds, a full bladder is often required; you will be instructed to drink several glasses of water and not urinate before the exam.
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. You may be asked to change into a gown.
  • Inform your doctor and the Radiologist about any medications you are taking.
  • For some specific scans, like a renal ultrasound, no special preparation may be needed.
  • Remove jewelry and other accessories from the area being examined.

Risks & possible complications

  • Diagnostic ultrasound is considered extremely safe with no known harmful effects when used appropriately.
  • There is a very small risk of misinterpretation of images, which could lead to a delayed or incorrect diagnosis.
  • In rare cases, a transvaginal or transrectal ultrasound may cause minor discomfort or spotting.
  • There is a theoretical concern about tissue heating with prolonged exposure, but diagnostic scans use power levels well within safety limits.
  • Allergic reactions to the ultrasound gel are extremely rare, as it is typically hypoallergenic and water-based.

Recovery & hospital stay

  • There is typically no recovery time or downtime needed after a standard sonography exam.
  • You can resume your normal activities, including driving, eating, and working, immediately after the procedure.
  • The water-based gel used on your skin will be wiped off, and you may have a slightly damp feeling.
  • If you had a pelvic ultrasound requiring a full bladder, you can use the restroom immediately after.
  • A Radiologist will analyze the images and send a detailed report to your referring doctor, who will discuss the results with you, usually within a few days.
  • No special post-procedure care is required.
  • checked Typical hospital stay: 0 days (outpatient procedure)
  • checked Expected recovery time: 0 days (immediate)
