About Stenting

Cardiac stenting, also known as percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), is a minimally invasive procedure performed by cardiac surgeons or interventional cardiologists to open narrowed or blocked coronary arteries. Using advanced imaging guidance, a thin catheter is threaded through a blood vessel in the wrist or groin to the affected artery. A small, expandable mesh tube called a stent is then placed at the blockage site to prop the artery open, restoring healthy blood flow to the heart muscle. This procedure is a cornerstone treatment for coronary artery disease, effectively relieving symptoms like chest pain (angina) and reducing the risk of heart attack. Modern stents are often drug-eluting, releasing medication to prevent scar tissue growth and re-narrowing of the artery.

Key Highlights

Minimally invasive procedure with no large chest incisions required.Effectively restores blood flow to the heart, relieving angina and shortness of breath.Significantly reduces the risk of a future heart attack.Typically performed under local anesthesia, allowing for faster recovery than open-heart surgery.Uses drug-eluting stents to help prevent the artery from narrowing again (restenosis).Often allows for a shorter hospital stay and quicker return to normal activities./ul

Who is this surgery for?

  • Stable angina (chest pain) that is not adequately controlled with medication.
  • Unstable angina or a heart attack (myocardial infarction) to quickly open a blocked artery.
  • Significant blockage (usually 70% or more) in one or more major coronary arteries.
  • Positive results from a stress test or coronary angiogram showing reduced blood flow to the heart.
  • To improve symptoms and quality of life in patients with coronary artery disease.

How to prepare

  • Undergo diagnostic tests such as blood work, an electrocardiogram (ECG), and a coronary angiogram.
  • Discuss all current medications with your doctor; you may need to stop blood thinners like aspirin or clopidogrel temporarily.
  • Fast (no food or drink) for 6-8 hours before the procedure.
  • Arrange for someone to drive you home after hospital discharge.
  • Inform the medical team of any allergies, especially to iodine, contrast dye, or medications.

Risks & possible complications

  • Bleeding or bruising at the catheter insertion site in the wrist or groin.
  • Damage to the blood vessel used for catheter access.
  • Allergic reaction to the contrast dye used during imaging.
  • Blood clot formation within the stent (stent thrombosis), which can cause a heart attack.
  • Re-narrowing of the artery (restenosis) over time, though less common with drug-eluting stents.
  • Rare risks include kidney damage from contrast dye, stroke, or heart attack during the procedure.

Recovery & hospital stay

  • Initial monitoring for 4-6 hours in a recovery area to check the insertion site and vital signs.
  • Drink plenty of fluids to help flush the contrast dye from your system.
  • Avoid strenuous activity, heavy lifting, and driving for the first few days as advised.
  • Keep the insertion site clean and dry; report any signs of infection like redness, swelling, or fever.
  • Take all prescribed medications diligently, especially antiplatelet drugs (like aspirin and clopidogrel) to prevent blood clots in the stent.
  • Attend all follow-up appointments and participate in cardiac rehabilitation for guided exercise and lifestyle education.
  • checked Typical hospital stay: 1-3 days
  • checked Expected recovery time: 1-2 weeks for routine activities, 4-6 weeks for full recovery

PATIENT REVIEW

I'd been to a couple of...

I'd been to a couple of other doctors for this nagging fatigue and stomach pain. They said it was just stress. Dr. Babu Vinish actually listened, asked a ton of questions I hadn't been asked before, and ordered some specific tests. Turns out it was a tricky thyroid issue affecting my digestion. He explained it all on a notepad, drawing little diagrams. I finally felt like someone had found the right puzzle pieces.
