About Urostomy

A urostomy is a surgical procedure performed by a urologist to create a new pathway for urine to exit the body when the bladder is diseased, damaged, or removed. During the procedure, a segment of the small intestine (usually the ileum) is used to form a conduit. One end of this conduit is connected to the ureters (the tubes from the kidneys), and the other end is brought through an opening in the abdominal wall, called a stoma. A waterproof pouch (ostomy bag) is then attached to the skin around the stoma to collect urine continuously. This life-changing surgery is most commonly performed after a radical cystectomy for bladder cancer, but it is also indicated for other severe bladder dysfunctions, congenital defects, or spinal cord injuries. It allows for the safe and effective diversion of urine, improving patient health and quality of life.
