How to prepare
- Fasting is required for 6-8 hours before an esophageal manometry; clear liquids may be allowed up to 2 hours prior for anorectal manometry.
- Inform your doctor about all medications, especially blood thinners or muscle relaxants, as you may need to adjust or stop them.
- For anorectal manometry, you may be instructed to use a fleet enema at home to empty the rectum.
- Avoid smoking or chewing gum on the day of the procedure.
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to the appointment.

- Minor nosebleed or throat irritation from catheter insertion.
- Gagging, coughing, or a feeling of discomfort during the procedure.
