A nephrectomy is a surgical procedure to remove all or part of a kidney. While this surgery is most commonly performed by a urologist or general surgeon, a nephrologist (a kidney specialist) is the physician who diagnoses the underlying kidney condition, determines the medical necessity for the procedure, and provides critical pre- and post-operative care. The nephrologist manages the patient's overall kidney health, coordinates with the surgical team, and oversees long-term renal function after the surgery. Nephrectomies are performed to treat conditions like kidney cancer, severe kidney damage from infection or trauma, or to remove a healthy kidney from a living donor for transplantation. The procedure can be performed using open surgery or minimally invasive techniques like laparoscopy or robotic-assisted surgery, which typically lead to faster recovery.
