Dr. Anil Bhan is one of India’s most highly respected cardiac surgeons, with over 30 years of experience in cardiothoracic and vascular surgery. He is currently the Vice-Chairman of Cardiac Surgery at the Heart Institute, Medanta Hospital, Gurgaon, where he leads advanced cardiac procedures with a focus on aortic surgery.
Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Bhan has performed more than 15,000 successful cardiac and vascular surgeries, making him one of the most experienced heart surgeons in the country. He was also a key member of the surgical team that conducted India’s first successful heart transplant in 1994.
A true innovator, Dr. Bhan has designed and developed over 50 specialized surgical instruments that are widely used in cardiac operations. He is credited with performing one of the youngest coronary bypass surgeries recorded in medical literature, involving the repair of a coronary aneurysm.
In addition to his clinical excellence, Dr. Bhan has contributed to the development of three major cardiac surgery programs in India — at Puttaparthi (1992), Whitefield (2001), and Max Heart and Vascular Institute (2004). He has also received prestigious honors including the Best Outgoing Graduate Gold Medal from Medical College, Srinagar, and a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his service to cardiovascular health.
