Dr. Ashok Rajgopal

Dr. Ashok Rajgopal is a celebrated orthopedic surgeon and one of India’s foremost experts in joint replacement and arthroscopic surgery. As the Chairman of the Institute of Musculoskeletal Disorders and Orthopaedics at Medanta – The Medicity, Gurgaon, he brings decades of clinical mastery, having performed over 15,000 arthroscopic procedures focused on ligament reconstruction and knee repair.

A recipient of the Padma Shri, one of the highest civilian honors in India, Dr. Rajgopal has played a pivotal role in advancing orthopedic care, particularly in the area of knee surgery. He is recognized for introducing several groundbreaking surgical innovations, including the first bilateral total knee replacement in India (1987), and the country’s first minimally invasive unicompartmental knee replacement (2002). He was also the first surgeon in India to use patient-specific instruments for virtual total knee replacement, marking a significant leap in personalized orthopedic care.

Dr. Rajgopal earned his MBBS from Armed Forces Medical College, Pune in 1974, followed by an MS in Orthopedics from AIIMS, New Delhi in 1979. He later pursued his M.Ch. in Orthopedics at the University of Liverpool in 1983, and holds prestigious fellowships including FIMSA and FRCS (Edinburgh).

Beyond his clinical practice, Dr. Rajgopal has contributed significantly to surgical education and technology development, including the design of cutting-edge instrumentation used in modern knee replacement procedures. He is a founding member and former Secretary of the Asia Pacific Arthroplasty Society, a fellow of the International Medical Science Academy, and has served as President of the Indian Arthroplasty Association.

He holds memberships with elite medical bodies such as the Indian Orthopaedic Association, the General Medical Council (UK), and the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS). A sought-after speaker, Dr. Rajgopal regularly shares his expertise at global conferences and academic platforms.
